The total amount to be paid as penalties by telecom operators for violation of rules, is Rs 20300 crore. It is equal to 15 percent of the revenue of telecom services sector for the year 2011-12.
DoT imposed a penalty of Rs 1200 crore together on Airtel, Vodafone and Idea for illegal sharing of 3G spectrum.
Airtel was imposed a penalty of Rs 650 crore for illegal provision of SLD( Subscriber Local Dialling) services to roaming customers for avoiding roaming and STD charges during 2003-2005.
A penalty of Rs 2800 crore has to be paid by the private operators for issuing 19 lakhs SIMs on fake identity papers.
A penalty of Rs 351 Crores was imposed on Airtel, Reliance, Vodafone, TTSL, Aircel etc for not meeting emission radiation norms from their cell towers.
A penalty of Rs 1594 crore has to be paid by Airtel,Idea, Vodafone, TTSL, Tata Communications, and Reliance Communications for understating their revenues and paying less levies(License Fees,spectrum charges etc).
The above are some examples of these penalties imposed on the private operators. The private operators are thus violating rules to get illegal gains whereas BSNL and MTNL are following the rules, carrying out social responsibilities and facing losses.
Instead of paying these penalties the private operators are approaching courts, bringing pressure on the Government to evade the payment.
