On the occasion of the 122nd birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister Of India and the tallest leader of independence struggle after Mahatma Gandhi, it is relevant to remember what he told about our immediate task. He said, “Our immediate task is to raise the living standards of our people, to remove all that comes in the way of the economic growth of the nation.” He further said, “Socialism is the inevitable outcome of democracy. Political democracy has no meaning if it does not embrace economic democracy. And economic democracy is nothing but socialism. Monopoly is the enemy of socialism. To that extent it has grown during the last few years, we have drifted away from the goal of socialism.”
But inspite of the fact that the Country has been ruled for a pretty long time by the Congress Party lead by Jawaharlal Nehru and even now being ruled by the UPA lead by the Congress Party , and for some time by the so called alternative lead by BJP, the economic democracy is not achieved and in the Human Development Index India lags far behind and stands at 134th position among 187 countries and 61 crore people in India, more than half of its population, are in povery.
This is because both the Congress and BJP are not sincere in removing “all that comes in the way of the economic growth of the nation”. Nehru himself identified the monopoly capital and rural vested interests (feudal and capitalist landlords) as the forces coming in the way of the growth of the nation. Since both the Congress and the BJP are representing the monopoly capitalists and the rural vested interests, they are not acting against them. On the other hand they are continuously strengthening them and making them more and more rich by imposing burdens on the people.
Therefore to achieve economic democracy which is nothing but socialism as per Jawaharlal Nehru, it is necessary to destroy the hold of the monopoly capitalists and rural vested interests on our economy. This cannot be done by the political parties representing the same monopoly capitalists and rural vested interests. It can be done only by the Left Parties which are not committed to monopoly capitalists and rural vested interests. For this it is necessary for the people to rally behind the left parties.
